Top Five Films That Won the Best Picture Oscar

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I have seen every movie that has won a Best Picture Oscar since 1957 save three films. I think having awards for movies is a really good idea in theory. There should be some sort of system that rewards filmmakers, actors, and whoever else involved. God knows they aren’t compensated in any other way. Like anything involving human opinion, the Oscar’s are extremely subjective and can be downright political. Personally, I feel that more controversial or edgy movies are sidelined in favor of things that are viewed as safer. One glaring exception to this being the 1969 winner Midnight Cowboy, the first X-rated film to win. I suppose I got addicted to that feeling you get when you watch a great movie. Think of the movie “Silence of the Lambs.” I remember watching that for the first time as a kid and chills coming down my spine. It was so gruesome and depraved, yet so real, it felt like they weren’t acting; that this drama was unfolding in my living room. Needless to say, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, and I couldn’t stop thinking about what had transpired for days after. I think that is the mark of a good movie. Something that stays with you, makes you think, and keeps you entertained.
